Long Way Down

MEET THE AUTHOR

Paul Carr

Paul Carr is a life-long fan of crime fiction. While some of his current favorite authors are Carl Hiaasen, Randy Wayne White, and Michael Connelly, he has enjoyed the work of many others from the past, such as John D. MacDonald, Ross Thomas, Raymond Chandler and Agatha Christie.

A native Georgian, Paul entered the U.S. Navy at a young age and served on three aircraft carriers. After military service he studied Economics and Business in college and then spent a career working in financial and computer-related positions. During much of that time he also wrote in his spare time. Long Way Down is his first published novel.

Long Way Down
Interview with Paul Carr
By Judy Simpers

You are a debuting author with the book Long Way Down.  What would you like to give to readers as a first impression as a writer and author?

PC: My greatest hope is that readers will say, “Hey, that guy can tell a story.”  I plan to publish more books about Sam Mackenzie’s adventures, so I would like for them to remember him as a strong character and put me on their short list of authors to look for when selecting books.

As a debuting author readers like to know a little about the person behind the book such as residence, occupation and hobbies.

PC: I live on a lake in Georgia with my wife, Elaine.  While I have held many blue and white collar jobs over the years, at the present I am enjoying the life as a writer. I also enjoy reading, traveling, the seashore, golf, and rock music.

Did you know what the title would be from the beginning of your story?

PC: No, I didn’t.  This title came to me toward the end of the story when I thought about the deadly consequences for one of the primary characters.

How long did it take you to become acquainted with your characters Candi Moran and Sam MacKenzie?

PC: I developed the character of Sam Mackenzie over a period of years, so I knew him pretty well already.  Candi Moran evolved as I wrote and it took me a few pages to realize her full potential.

Your characters are colorful in description such as a soldier of fortune, a Russian partner, a government bad boy, a local crime fighter just to name a few.  What knowledge did you draw from to create theses characters?

PC: Actually, I don’t have any such personal acquaintances to draw on, so the characters in this story are completely imaginary.
